5 Safety Tips for the 100 Mile Yard Sale 2015
There is an old saying that “One man’s treasure is another man’s trash.” This will be proven in Southeast Missouri over the weekend as thousands shop the 100 Mile Yard Sale 2015 between Jackson, Missouri and Kennett, Missouri on Highway 25. While you may find a new treasure, you need to make sure to keep safety in mind. During the 100 Mile Yard Sale 2015, you may never know when someone might suddenly slow, swerve or stop car. You might not see someone step out from between tow parked cars along the side of the highway in time to react if you are not paying attention. Here are five common hazards that could occur and some tips on how to avoid them.
1. Locating the Yard Sales. This one is somewhat easy, as they are going to occur all along Highway 25. However, you need to have someone with you to be looking for specific sales to shop, so that you can keep your eyes on the road at all times.
2. Avoid collisions. Slow down and pay attention. Other drivers may be rubber-necking or suddenly stop. You need to practice defensive driving.
3. Look out for children. Pay particular attention when driving past parked cars or trucks. Children can easily be hidden from view by parked cars and can dart in to the roadway at any time.
4. Watch where you load your treasures. Don’t park in the highway to load your finds. Get safely off of the road. If you even think you may be partially in the road, have a spotter or flagger to warn oncoming traffic.
5. Secure your load. Make sure your purchases are safely loaded and tied down in your car or truck so that you won’t lose them. Items falling out of cars or truck and into traffic are a big safety hazard.
