5 Tips to Avoid a Truck Accident
In 2012, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there were 3,702 fatal crashes on American roadways, which involved at least one large truck or bus. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has slightly different numbers, showing 3,921 fatalities and 104,000 injuries from truck crashes in 2012. Simple math reflects that there are then more than ten fatal crashes and 284 injuries on an average day across our country. FMCSA statistics show that fatal truck crashes were up over 18% between 2009 and 2012, although the annual distance trucks travel on the highway is down 2.67% and the number of trucks is down 2.86%. The numbers are staggering and don’t reflect the real cost of truck accidents in terms of the lives that are forever changed.
Truck accidents involve large, heavy equipment, causing severe injuries or death. Here are five tips to help you avoid a truck accident:
1. Never pass trucks on the right. Section 304.016.2(4) RSMo., makes it illegal to pass on the right unless you are on a four lane road, and then, you may pass on the right only if it is safe to do so. Passing a truck on the right is dangerous because trucks usually have blind spots that can make it difficult to see you. Make it a habit to only pass trucks on the left side.
2. Don’t make it hard for trucks to pass you. In a related tip, make sure you move to the right if you are in the passing lane and a truck comes up behind you. It is easier for you to shift lanes than it is for the truck. Never drive between large trucks.
3. Avoid tailgating a truck. If a passenger car rear ends a large truck it can be fatal if the car is caught underneath a truck’s bumper.
4. When driving in front of a truck, don’t slow down unnecessarily. Trucks need more room to stop than cars do, and even if they lock their brakes, the weight of the truck alone will carry it a long distance. Leave a larger “safe zone” between you and the truck if possible.
5. Don’t misjudge the speed of approaching trucks. Assume that they are “closer than they appear”.
