Herniated Disc Injuries

A herniated disc, can occur from many different causes, from simple aging to an auto accident or truck accident. Herniated disc injuries can sometimes resolve with conservative treatment like physical therapy or injections. Other times, surgical intervention is required. A serious disc injury is painful and can disable an accident victim from either pain or muscle weakness caused by a pinched nerve.

There are three main levels of discs in the back, the cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels. In the neck, herniated cervical discs cause pain and numbness in the back of the skull, neck, shoulder, arm and hand. This can result in weakness and “pins and needles” type sensations in the neck and arm. In the lower back, herniated lumbar discs can result in pain and numbness radiating from the back down one or both legs, which may continue all the way to the foot. This radicular pain from a herniated lumbar disc is sometimes called sciatica. Emergent medical care is needed if you suffer from drop foot or lose control of your bladder function.
