Hosting a Super Bowl Party? Be a Responsible Host

We’re less than 24 hours away from the kickoff of Super Bowl 50. Here are 50 fun facts about the Super Bowl to share with your guests while hosting a Super Bowl party.

Many people will attend a watch party. If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party, you should consider reviewing your homeowners policy or other personal liability coverage. Are you covered in the event that someone is injured during or after the party and a premises liability suit is filed? Some things to consider:

1. Is your entry clean and in good repair so as to prevent slip and fall injuries if you’re hosting a Super Bowl party? Coverage for slip and fall injuries is usually found in the liability section of your insurance policies.

2. Is the food safe? Is food poisoning a possibility? Again, coverage may be available through the liability section of your insurance policies. Do you have an umbrella policy? If so, you may want to review this as well.

Here are a couple of good food recipes to try while hosting a Super Bowl party:
Jalapeño Popper Dip
Ingredients
2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies
1 can (4 ounces) diced jalapeno peppers
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1 tablespoon olive oil
Corn chips, tortilla chips or assorted crackers

Directions
In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, mayonnaise, cheddar, chilies, peppers and 1/4 cup Parmesan until blended. Spoon into an ungreased 1-1/2-qt. baking dish.
In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs, oil and remaining Parmesan. Sprinkle over cheese mixture. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 20-25 min. or until golden brown. Serve with chips or crackers.

Mozzarella Cheese Dip

Combine the following and chill very well before serving:
1 cup shredded Mozzarella
1 pint Helmann’s mayonnaise
1 carton sour cream
1 tsp Accent
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp seasoned pepper
1 tbsp parsley
1 tbsp minced onion
2 tbsp Parmesan cheese

Serve with chips, crackers or fresh vegetables.

3. Are you serving alcohol? According to a report in the 2003 New England Journal of Medicine, driving fatalities increased 41% after the Super Bowl telecast. If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party and someone leaves your home intoxicated, gets behind the wheel of their car, and injures someone, you can bet that you will be sued. Missouri law generally does not impose civil liability on social hosts for damages related to a guest’s consumption of alcoholic beverages, but a vast majority of states have the opposite position. Some good ideas to avoid liability in this setting include the following: don’t serve alcohol; don’t allow anyone who has consumed alcohol to drive after the party; or call a cab for anyone who has been drinking.

If you are a guest, do you have coverage if you are involved in an auto accident on the way home? While you may have done your part to avoid an accident following the party, not everyone will be as responsible. If you or a loved one have been injured, it is important to know what to do next.
