Love Your Lawyer Day 2016

Love your lawyer day is today, November 4, 2016. It is unlikely that another made up holiday will change the public perception of lawyers in general. In a 2015 article, Mark A. Cohen writes, “Literature is rife with lawyer bashing dating back hundreds of years. But the numbers suggest that their unpopularity has grown in recent years. A 1973 Harris survey found that 24% of respondents had high confidence in lawyers-a low percentage. Two decades later, that figure cratered to 7%. And a 2013 Pew survey found lawyers last among ten professional categories for “contributions to society.” Attorneys garnered an 18% affirmative response. By contrast, the military was 78%, teachers 72%, and doctors 66%.”

Bad Lawyers Are the Exception not the Rule

Lawyers who give the legal profession a bad reputation are the exception, not the rule. Most lawyers take their clients legal matters very seriously and make every effort to represent them fairly and to the best of their abilities. This is reflected in surveys that show people love “their” lawyer but don’t like the profession in general.

Love Your Lawyer Day – The Good Lawyers

Attorney Robert A. Clifford writes “Above all, I feel lawyers, as a cornerstone of a democratic society, must remain the hope of the downtrodden, those who can ill afford the spiraling costs and expenses associated with bringing a lawsuit when they have been wrongly injured. The fabric of our country has a history filled with lawyers fighting for truth and justice. We must try to continue the work of these respected jurists, from John Adams to Thurgood Marshall, … who have fought tough battles on behalf of individual rights, personal liberties and the independence of the American justice system. Since [the] first Continental Congress, it was lawyers who were the champions of justice and personal freedom. How ironic that today lawyers find themselves so collectively unpopular.”

Love Your Lawyer Day

We’re not asking you to come give us a big hug today. Instead, don’t be so quick to think a lawyer joke is true about all lawyers. The jokes are funny, that’s why even we laugh at them. Just remember the jokes aren’t universal truths.

By the way, have you heard about the word processing program designed for lawyers? No matter what font you choose, everything comes out in fine print!
