Mother’s Day, Mom’s Health and Zofran

Mother’s Day kicks off National Women’s Health Week, which runs from May 10-16, 2015. Today is all about mom. Celebrate Mother’s Day by encouraging her to take simple steps to avoid putting her own health needs on the back burner.

The U.S. Department of Health and Senior Services established National Women’s Health Week to encourage women to make their health a top priority. This is the 16th National Women’s Health Week that has been observed in our country. Women are often the primary caregivers for their families, their in-laws, and often, their own mothers.

A mother’s health is of outmost importance. This is especially true for mom if she is pregnant. Many mom’s experience severe nausea during pregnancy. Recently, many women were prescribed Zofran during pregnancy to help ease morning sickness and vomiting. Zofran is a medication approved to treat nausea in cancer patients. It has not been sufficiently studied or tested for safety in pregnant women, and was NEVER approved to treat nausea in pregnant women suffering from morning sickness. When used during pregnancy, Zofran is considered an “off-label” use.

Some women who took Zofran during their pregnancy had children born with cleft palate or other heart defects such as atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD). If you are a mother of a child who was born with any of these birth defects, we encourage you to contact us today.
