Safe Travels in Winter Weather

UPDATED POST: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Butler County (and the entire SE Missouri region) beginning at 6 PM Sunday, February 15, 2015 through 6 PM Monday, February 16, 2015. 5-8 inches through the night with an additional 3 inches or so on Monday is projected. Some models show that Poplar Bluff could receive as much as 12 inches of snow. Please be very careful and plan accordingly today.

Here are some tips to handle travel in winter weather conditions:

Wait to Travel if Possible
You will be safer if the roads have been salted or cleared. Most state highway departments have a road condition map on their website that is updated frequently. Check for road conditions before leaving the safety of your home. Here is the link for the MoDOT travel map:

Windshield Wipers, Windows and Lights
Check your windshield wipers and washer fluid to make sure both are in good working order. Always scrape ice off of your windshield and other windows before driving so that you can see. Keep your lights on so others can see you better.

Watch the Road and Other Drivers
Road conditions can change rapidly. Remember that bridges and overpasses will ice over first. If you are on ice, take your foot off the accelerator and proceed gently. Do not use your brakes aggressively. Keep plenty of space between your car and other vehicles so that you have time to react to unsafe drivers.

Speed and Steering
Slow down and do not use your cruise control in snow or ice. Avoid oversteering. If you oversteer while on snow and ice, you can lose control of your vehicle.

Common sense and patience will help you travel safely in the winter. These tips are meant to help keep you safe while on the road. Unfortunately, drivers who are not mindful of the winter road conditions often cause auto accidents. If you’ve been involved in an auto accident due to another’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact the attorneys at Kennedy, Kennedy, Robbins &Yarbro, LC for a free consultation.
