Safe Use of Navigation Apps
For many parents, knowledge about new advancements in technology come from their children. Sometimes, however, even technological advancements designed to be helpful come with risks. Cellphone and GPS navigation apps are extremely helpful and can prevent many disastrous situations. Yet, the improper use of navigation apps can make driving on Missouri roads even more dangerous in certain circumstances.
Missouri driving laws are designed to protect drivers and pedestrians, and they change often. Missouri’s distracted driving law applies to commercial drivers and drivers who are 21 years of age or younger. Missouri is one of only two states, Montana being the other, that does not have a complete ban on texting while driving. Why is that important? Did you know that texting and driving is 6 times more likely to cause a car accident than being intoxicated behind the wheel?
As a result, parents need to teach their children the proper use of GPS navigation apps when driving.
Safely Use Navigation Apps
Young and inexperienced drivers who are both learning how to drive and to navigate in a certain area, are likely anxious. If they’re driving slow because they’re lost, it’s likely that a local driver behind them may become aggravated and honk at them, adding to that anxiety. The safe use of navigation apps can help your child avoid anxiety and difficulties while driving:
- Mount It – Make sure cellphones are mounted in clear sight and are used navigation apps only
- Route It – If your child’s cell phone is their only navigational tool, make sure they always have a good feel for their route before driving.
- They’re the Judge – Make sure they know that they need to feel safe before making a turn, accelerating, etc. and not to make decisions based solely on the navigation apps or the driver behind them.
- Give Confidence with a Compass – If you’re teaching them to drive, make sure that they know the fundamentals of North, South, East & West and that they are not 100% reliant upon the navigation apps.
As parents, you can set a stellar example for your children by following these rules yourself. Habits are more caught than taught.
