Tips to Protect Your Cell Phone from Theft

One in three robberies in the United States involved the theft of a cell phone. Data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and law enforcement agencies indicate that in North America, more than 100 cell phones are stolen every minute. According to information reported on by USA Today, that is a total of 1.6 million Americans who had their cell phone stolen in 2012 alone.

The real harm in cell phone theft is not the loss of the device, but perhaps more importantly, the potential loss of your personal data. If accessible, thieves may use this personal data for identity theft purposes. Authorities suggest several ways that you can protect your cell phone from theft and secure your personal data:

1. Avoid leaving your cell phone unattended. If you must leave your phone, make sure it is locked away and out of sight.

2. Lock and password-protect your cell phone. If your cell phone is stolen, keeping it locked will help protect your data. Take advantage of apps or tools built into your phone to erase data automatically if a certain number of unsuccessful attempts to break your password are attempted. Use location and anti-theft applications to help find your device.

3. Use strong passwords and update them. Avoid using your name, birthdate, or other personal identification for your password. Don’t use the same password across all sites. If your cell phone is stolen change all of your passwords as soon as possible.

4. Report your cell phone as stolen. The FCC’s website provides a full listing of contacts to report the loss of your phone to your carrier. You should notify your local authorities as well.
