Traveling in Icy Conditions

Traveling in icy conditions can be dangerous. Learn how to plan ahead for safety when driving children on icy roads. When traveling in icy conditions, especially with young children, it is important that you are prepared for safety. Here are six steps you should take before traveling in icy conditions:

1. Make sure that car safety seats are installed properly and that every adult is wearing a seat belt. In case an auto accident occurs, everyone in the car is as protected as possible.
2. Make sure you have a first aid kit, extra blankets, and gloves in the car.
3. Make sure to bring water and a small, filling snack. This will help if an emergency occurs.
4. Dress your children in thin, snug layers, rather than thicker coats and materials that could make it hard for them to move around. Thicker materials may cause car seat straps to not fit properly, and as a result, they may not work properly.
5. Bringing along an iPad, electronics, or books for long drives to keep your children occupied. This will help you to stay focused on the road ahead and not become distracted by what is happening in the back seat.
6. Check the car’s tail pipe and clear it of any snow. Clogged tail pipes increase the chances of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Other General Winter Driving Tips for Traveling in Icy Conditions

Once on the road, you can practice basic winter driving safety as well. Drive at a safe speed for the road conditions, even if you are rushing to your destination before road conditions worsen. Remember to leave plenty of room between yourself and other cars since it takes longer to slow down on icy roads. Avoid stopping on highways or while going up hills.
