Verdict – Not Guilty!
Defending Against Six Felony Counts and the potential 82-Year Sentence
Verdict – Not Guilty! Winning a tough trial is always rewarding, but some victories stand out because of the stakes. Recently, I defended a client charged with six serious felony counts, facing the potential of an 82-year sentence. The case required exhaustive preparation, strategic motions, and careful evidentiary challenges. In the end, the jury saw the truth and sided with the defendant. The jury found his claims of self-defense credible, and entered a unanimous verdict – not guilty!
The Preparation and Strategy
Trial work is never just about what happens in the courtroom—it’s about what happens long before the jury is even seated. It is typical to spend 4-5 hours of preparation for every hour spent in trial. That preparation includes analyzing every piece of evidence, filing and arguing multiple motions to suppress, and anticipating evidentiary issues with evidence the prosecution would use. Crafting a clear, compelling self-defense argument required not only legal knowledge but also a deep understanding of the facts and how they fit within the law.
The Battle in Court
From jury selection to closing arguments, every phase of this trial mattered. The prosecution aggressively pushed for a conviction, but I fought back with cross-examinations and arguments that exposed the weaknesses in their case. By focusing on the principles of self-defense and cracks in the prosecution’s evidence, I demonstrated why the charges against my client were unfounded. The jury deliberated and ultimately returned a verdict in my client’s favor—a testament to the power of a strong defense.
