Why Hiring Local Matters in Personal Injury Cases

Hiring local counsel in personal injury cases matters. Over the past few years, we’ve noticed a trend in personal injury cases—clients looking for a lawyer to represent them often turn to out-of-town attorneys first. Almost without exception, those out of town attorneys invest heavily in TV advertising, internet advertising, billboards, etc. . .. As a result of the slick advertising, these attorneys or law firms are often the first names many injured individuals think of when they need help.

What Happens to Your Case with a TV Attorney?

But what happens after they hire these firms? Frequently, those firms turn around and associate with (hiring) local lawyers that will actually handle the case.

Just recently, I resolved a serious auto accident case involving a traumatic brain injury. The case came to our firm by referral from an out-of-town firm that had been retained by the injured client. After stepping in to handle the litigation, I successfully reached a $725,000 settlement for the client before trial.

While I appreciate my colleagues trusting me to handle these complex cases, I can’t help but think: Why didn’t the client call me first?

Consider Hiring Local Attorneys First

There’s a perception that big advertising firms have more resources, more experience, and more ability to maximize case value. The reality is that those who know the courts, the judges, the opposing counsel, and the nuances of personal injury law in our area—are often the better choice from the start.  Rather than hiring an out-of-town firm that will likely turn to someone else to litigate the case, injured individuals should consider going directly to someone who knows the community, understands the legal landscape, and has a proven track record of results.

If you or a loved one have been injured, we encourage you to think twice before making that call to a TV advertising law firm. The best representation may be closer to home than you think, often with that same lawyer that sponsors your kids’ baseball or soccer team, that goes to church with you, or that employs local people to staff their office.
